The Galveston Naval Museum is inviting the public to join them at their annual Memorial Day Ceremony on May 27th, 2019 at 100 Seawolf Parkway, Galveston, Texas. The ceremony will begin at 11 am and the museum will provide free admission to attendees from 9 am to 12 pm.
They will begin by remembering military service members who sacrificed their lives in defense of our nation, and will then honor original crew members “plank owners”, Ernest “Zeke” Zellmer, Captain USN (Ret.) from the USS Cavalla SS-244, and Gunner’s Mate Chief Rudolph Biro from the USS Stewart DE-238. Mrs. Diana Zellmer, spouse of the late Captain Zellmer, will be the keynote speaker for the ceremony. The ceremony will also have remarks from Rich Biro, son of Chief Biro.
The colors will be presented by the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corp and music provided by Jack Chambers of Houston and Beyond AM1070. The Submarine Veterans Association will hold a Tolling of the Bells for all of the sailors that are on eternal patrol, and a commemorative wreath will be placed in Galveston Bay as a symbol of remembrance.
Newly constructed exhibits honoring these World War II veterans will be on display. Uniformed re-enactors will also be on site and our veteran docents will give free guided tours of both the USS Stewart and the USS Cavalla following the ceremony.
Refreshments will be provided by Sherwin Williams of Galveston.
